In 2019, the Colorado Smiles Project began as something simple—just a grassroots effort driven by a desire to show up for kids in our community in a real and meaningful way. There was no formal structure, no funding, and no long-term plan—just a willingness to help and a belief that even small acts of service could make a difference.
What started with providing backpacks, school supplies, and haircuts for students quickly grew into something much bigger. Families began to rely on these efforts. Attendance increased year after year. What we thought might be a one-time project became a consistent, needed presence in the community.
As that growth continued, it became clear that in order to serve well, we needed structure. That realization led to the creation of our first nonprofit, High Plains Humanitarian. Through that organization, we were able to expand our reach, organize resources more effectively, and support a broader range of community needs. High Plains Humanitarian continues to operate today with a wide scope of services, making a meaningful impact in many areas.
But through that experience, something became even clearer—while the broader mission mattered, my passion was deeply rooted in serving youth. I saw firsthand the impact we were making with kids, and I knew there was an opportunity to build something more focused, more intentional, and more impactful in that space.
That vision led to the creation of the Colorado Smiles Project.
This new chapter was built with purpose from the start—centered entirely around supporting, uplifting, and investing in the next generation. Today, our work is grounded in three core pillars:
1. Community Events That Meet Immediate Needs
Our back-to-school and Christmas events provide essential items like backpacks, school supplies, and holiday gifts—but more importantly, they create experiences that bring confidence, joy, and a sense of belonging to the children and families we serve.
2. Investing in the Future Through Scholarships
Our annual scholarship program supports high school students as they take their next steps. Through an essay-based application and a thoughtful selection process led by board members and community partners, we invest directly in the goals and potential of our youth.
3. Supporting Mental Health and Well-Being
We believe caring for kids means supporting the whole child. Our mental health outreach initiative is focused on connecting students with resources, raising awareness, and building partnerships with local organizations to ensure support is accessible and impactful.
Today, the Colorado Smiles Project represents both where we started and how far we’ve come. It’s built on the same heart that started everything—but now with clear direction, stronger infrastructure, and a long-term vision.
Looking ahead, we are focused on growing each of our programs, expanding our reach, and continuing to build meaningful partnerships within the community. Our goal is not just to meet needs in the moment, but to create lasting opportunities that impact the lives of young people for years to come.
What began as a simple idea has evolved into something much greater—and this is just the beginning.
